CHENNAI: Belgium wants India to expedite the process to sign a double taxation avoidance treaty, the country's ambassador has said.

Last year, Belgium received about one billion euro worth of investments, Belgium Ambassador Jean M Deboutte said at a seminar of the South Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry here last night.

"The double taxation avoidance treaty is under preparation and we want it to be taken up immediately. We are pushing our government and hope the Indian government will also take up the issue," he said.

Deboutte added that rules and regulations in Belgium were favourable to attract investments. "India should make its regulations more favourable to attract more investments," he said. Present India has a double taxation avoidance treaty with various countries, including Mauritius, Malaysia and Singapore.
