Bahrain for stronger ties with India
Bahrain Chamber of Commerce has called upon Indian business leaders to make the country their business and industrial hub for the region.
"India is an economic giant and we should strengthen our bilateral trade and set up more joint venture between our countries," said Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) board member and Bahrain-Asia Trading Committee chairman Othman Sharif.
He was speaking at the opening of a meeting with Indian businessmen, who formed part of a delegation to the Indo-Bahrain Joint Committee for Economic and Technical Co-operation meeting which opened in Manama. Sharif said the trade balance between Bahrain and India is only $300 million while the figures between India and Dubai stood at $17 billion.
"We are located strategically and our airport, sea port, free zone and industrial zone are all located on a highway leading to Saudi Arabia," he added. Bahrain's Ambassador to India Mohammed Ghassan Shaikho, who was also present at the function, said that Bahrain can be an ideal hub for Indian companies to do business with the rest of the world, including the US with which the Kingdom has signed a free trade agreement.
Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Gulf Council co-chairman A C Patankar, speaking on behalf of the Indian side, said that India has always held Bahrain in high esteem.
"However, our possibilities are still untapped. At a time when Bahrain has regained its glory as the financial hub of the region, Indian businessmen will explore all possibilities to further enhance the trade links," he added.
