Argentina is a key supplier in terms of food security for India and can become a key player in terms of energy security, Ambassador Mariano Caucino affirmed during the India-Mercosur Session, in the framework of the INDIA-LAC Conclave 2025 organised by CII.

Speaking together with his colleagues from Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay, Caucino stated that “at a bilateral level, India and Argentina have strong relations covering a wide range of sectors. Argentina and India share common values, a stable flux of trade and a partnership that was elevated to the status of Strategic Partnership in 2019”.

Caucino stated that “India is among Argentina’s first six export partners”.


The Argentine envoy reminded that “trade between Argentina and India has reached an impressive $4.6 billion, with Argentina becoming a key supplier of soybean and sunflower oil to India” and affirmed that “these commodities are vital for ensuring food security for Indian consumers”.

Regarding Indian investments in Argentina, the Ambassador emphasized that recent years marked a significant milestone with Indian mining companies starting operations in Argentina’s Catamarca province, such as KABIL and MECL who are not only exploring lithium but also showing interest in copper and gold.

The Argentine Ambassador highlighted the visit of Governor Raúl Jalil, of Catamarca province, who had very fruitful meetings with Secretary Kantha Rao along with MECL, KABIL, COAL India among other important companies.

In the same way, Caucino stated as a milestone in the Argentine-indian link the visit of Horacio Marin, Chairman and CEO of YPF, Argentina´s main oil and gas company on January, when they signed an agreement with Oil India, GAIL and ONGC to provide LGN to India.

Caucino affirmed that “India is becoming more and more important in the global stage and has already reached the fifth´s largest economy in the world and we have to expand links between India and our countries for the mutual benefit of our people”.
