World Bank sanctions Punjab Rs 410 cr for project

The World Bank today gave its nod to a Rs 410 crore multi-stage agricultural competitiveness project (MACP) in Punjab for expanding infrastructure and intelligence facilities in the state.

CHANDIGARH: The World Bank today gave its nod to Rs 410 crore multi-stage agricultural competitiveness project (MACP) in Punjab for expanding infrastructure and intelligence facilities in the state.

The project would also help to intensify and diversify production patterns and capacity building for farm sector in the state.

A three member team of World Bank led by economist Dina Umali Deninger met Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal here today.

Deninger said this project would give a boost to the farm productivity and making production more market-oriented.
The chief minister told the visiting team that Punjab was a leading state in agriculture production and deserved a special consideration from the World Bank.

He said MACP would empower the small farmers to respond positively to the changes in the food market besides strengthening marketing infrastructure to improve farmers' income by organising them into producer groups and providing them the required extension services.
