US seeks investment from India

The world's largest economy is seeking investment to "import jobs", David Bohigian said today.

NEW DELHI: The United States is soliciting across the board investment with focus on knowledge-based sectors from India to improve job prospects for its workforce.

The world's largest economy is seeking investment to "import jobs", assistant secretary in US Department of Commerce, David Bohigian said today while addressing an interactive meeting on "Invest in America" theme with the members of the Indo-American Chambers of Commerce.

Promising to look into problems concerning issuance of visas and temporary work permit, and knock down non-tariff barriers, Bohigian said as part of the invest in America initiative the US embassy will provide information to investors especially small and medium enterprises (SMEs) about basic issues like "where to go ... whom to contact".

Unlike Singapore, the US is not seeking investment in any particular sector, Bohigian said adding America was strong in every sector and investors can look for investment in knowledge-based sectors, agriculture sector and services sector.

Referring to the refusal of the US to allow certain firms to invest in America in the recent past due to security consideration, he said Americans of late have matured and welcome investment.

Bohigian further said as part of the three-point agenda to seek investment, US government has committed itself to become more open, work towards reducing health and insurance cost and relax visa policy.
