UNIDO to give $42 mn aid to India to boost industrial prod

India has signed a $42-mn comprehensive technical cooperation programme with the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation to strengthen productivity of industrial units.

NEW DELHI: India has signed a USD 42-million (about Rs 176.4 crore) comprehensive technical cooperation programme with the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation to strengthen productivity of industrial units in an environmentally sustainable manner.

"The Country Programme India 2008-12 is a five-year flagship scheme focusing on manufacturing sector, especially the SMEs, with an objective to promote clean-green technology and enhance employment generation," Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion Joint Secretary N N Prasad told reporters here.

The programme would cover 30 projects over the next five years as part of enhancing competitiveness and the greening of industry, he said.

The programme would cover sector like leather, textile, auto components, machine tools, chemicals and food processing industrial particularly in states like Rajasthan, UP, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and Orissa, he said.

It will introduce and promote eco-business partnership concept and approaches in select cities including demand driven demonstration pilot projects in renewable energy, energy efficiency and waste management, he added.

UNIDO representative and head of its South Asia operations, Philippe Scholtes said 50 per cent of the funding would come from external resources while the rest would by in the form of soft intervention like technical expertise.

Recognising that the most cost-effective intervention is at the level of industrial clusters, Prasad said there will be a mapping of clusters at an estimated cost of USD 2 million, which would identify the major SME clusters in the country and analyse the specific measures needed to enhance their competitiveness.
