Tax collection touches Rs 1,54,000 cr

Tax collection in the country has touched Rs 1,54,000 crore and is likely to cross the target of Rs 2,67,000 crore, recording an overall growth of about 44 per cent, Central Board of Direct Taxes chairman R Prasad said on Friday.

NAGPUR: Tax collection in the country has touched Rs 1,54,000 crore and is likely to cross the target of Rs 2,67,000 crore, recording an overall growth of about 44 per cent, Central Board of Direct Taxes chairman R Prasad said on Friday.

For the first time, indirect taxes will be less compared to previous years and would be to the tune of 60 per cent, Prasad told reporters on the sidelines of induction of 61st batch of IRS at National Academy of Direct Taxes (NADT).

He said the tax base has widened by about 10 lakh taxpayers, which used to be an annual phenomenon till now.

To a question, Prasad admitted that hi-tech process of e-filing, e-returns and e-payments are not doing well, but hoped it would improve in another two-years time. On e-returns, he said sometimes taxpayers mention wrong bank account number leading to problems in repayments.

A A Wijepala, Commissioner General Inland Revenue Department of Sri Lanka, who was guest of honour at induction ceremony, said Lanka always looked at India for imparting training to its officers. Presently 800 of them are in India and 88 of them in NADT.

"Priority was to widen tax base and become more friendly with taxpayers to attract them. We want to remove their apprehensions," he asserted.
