RBI keen on implementing its outreach programme: Subir Gokarn
The RBI is keen on effective implementation of its ‘outreach programme’, evolved under the financial inclusion scheme, as it is aimed at helping villagers, Reserve Bank deputy governor Subir Gokarn said on Thursday.
“The RBI is keen on enforcing the outreach programme as effectively as possible,” he said, handing over loans totalling Rs 22.60 lakh to six women self-help groups (SHGs) under a scheme of the Indian Bank at Mangalam village.
Mr Gokarn said that Mangalam was emerging as a model village under the financial inclusion scheme. “It is indeed a great achievement that this village in Puducherry has witnessed opening of around 2,000 savings bank accounts by 800 families, and this showcases Indian Bank’s role in the field,” he said.
More steps are needed to ensure that more households come under the financial inclusion umbrella, he said, adding, “We understand the scenario and render services as best as we can to improve the lot of villagers.”
Earlier, Gokarn had declared open an Indian Bank-financed exhibition of SHG products. He also held discussions with beneficiaries of the scheme.
