Railways generates Rs 49,209 cr of revenue earnings from commodity-wise freight

Railways carried 705 million tonnes of commodity-wise freight traffic during the period as compared to 673 million tonnes carried during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 4.68 per cent.

NEW DELHI: Indian Railways have generated Rs 49,209 crore of revenue earnings from commodity-wise freight traffic during April-December 2011 as compared to Rs 44,789 crore during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 4.59 per cent.

Railways carried 705 million tonnes of commodity-wise freight traffic during the period as compared to 673 million tonnes carried during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 4.68 per cent.

The Net Tonne Kilo Metres (NTKM) went up from 444,515 million during April-December 2010 to 466,968 million during April-December 2011, showing an increase of 4.68 per cent.

Out of the total earnings of Rs 6,102 crore from commodity-wise freight traffic during the month of December 2011, Rs 2,549 crore came from transportation of 41 million tonnes of coal, followed by Rs. 544 crore from 9 million tonnes of iron ore for exports, steel plants and for other domestic user and Rs. 563 crore from 9.37 million tonnes of cement.

Railways also generated Rs 404 crore from 4 million tonnes of foodgrains, Rs 329 crore from 3.52 million tonnes of petroleum oil and lubricant (POL), Rs 369 crore from 3 million tonnes of Pig iron and finished steel from steel plants and other points, and Rs 485 crore from 5.6 million tonnes of fertilizers

Apart from this, it earned Rs 100 crore from 1.1 million tonnes through transportation of raw material for steel plants except iron ore, Rs 304 crore from 3.46 million tonnes by container service and Rs. 457 crore from 7 million tonnes of other goods.
