“All preparations are in place for transferring ₹2,000 each to 90 million bank accounts. We are just waiting for instructions from higher-ups whether to send money in a phased manner or at one go,” said an agriculture ministry official.

He said that senior ministry officials were busy dealing with farmer protests. “It may be one of the reasons. However, in the last fiscal also, the instalment due in December was disbursed next month to 60 million farmers at one go by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a ceremony in Bengaluru. This time too, the government may plan a similar exercise after resolution of the farmer crisis,” the official said.
