M Karunanidhi demands relief package for drought-hit Cauvery Delta region farmers

M Karunanidhi sought an assessment of the drought-situation in Cauvery Delta region by the TN govt, &a demanded a relief package for the affected farmers.

CHENNAI: DMK chief M Karunanidhi today sought a "genuine assessment" of the drought-situation in Cauvery Delta region by the Tamil Nadu government, and demanded a relief package for the affected farmers.

Citing reports that 'Kuruvai' (short-term) crops had failed due to lack of water besides grim prospects of 'Samba' (short-term) crops, he said the Jayalalithaa government should assess the situation.

"The government should carry out a genuine assessment of the drought situation and take steps accordingly and consider extending a relief of Rs 10,000 per acre," among others, he said writing in party organ 'Murasoli'.
