Loss due to corrosion is put at Rs 80,000 cr a year
The county is losing Rs 80,000 crore per annum on account of corrosion in various sectors.
The sectors include manufacturing, petroleum, chemical and fertilisers, oil & gas, transportation, power, highway and railways.
The US is losing more than $276 billion and India Rs 80,000 crore per annum on account of corrosion. Substantial portion of this can be saved if proper corrosion management system was adopted, NACE International (USA) President Louis Vincent said here.
It is roughly estimated that defence is losing around Rs 8,100 crore, fertilisers, refinery and chemical plants Rs 3,900 crore, oil and gas exploration to distribution Rs 8,750 crore.
Among others shipping industry and ports is losing Rs 7,400 crore, airports-aeroplane and related structures Rs 3,250 crore, water treatment plants Rs 2,970 crore, automobile industry Rs 3,750 crore, railway stations and trains Rs 7,700 crore due to corrosion every year.
IT industry, telecom and communication equipment lose estimated Rs 2,550 crore, while the figure for other sectors of economy, which can't be classified specifically, stood at Rs 35,000 crore.
NACE International (USA), a premier institute of corrosion engineering, is propagating corrosion awareness and its mitigation technology in order to protect costly physical assets from continuous degradation due to this process.
