LDF Govt to seek World Bank loan for local bodies

LDF in Kerala has asked the state government to explore possibilities of availing low-rate World Bank loan for projects to be implemented by local bodies.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The liaison committee of the CPI(M)-led ruling LDF in Kerala has asked the state government to explore possibilities of availing low-rate World Bank loan for projects to be implemented by local bodies.

A meeting of the LDF held here on Saturday felt availing the loan, which charged just 0.25 per cent interest, would help the cash-strapped civic bodies to carry out some major developmental projects.

The LDF would recommend the government to begin talks with the World Bank officials on obtaining such loans which did not have much strings attached, the LDF state committee convener and CPI-M leader Vaikom Viswan told reporters.

The Centre had recently informed the states of the availability of these facilities, he added.

In another policy change, the panel gave clearance for the government to adopt BOT route to develop national highways.

Talks could start with the Central agencies in this regard as most other states had already adopted this method instead of building roads solely on state funds.

Earlier, when the Centre proposed the BOT mode for highway development, Kerala had expressed reservation as it would mean casting a burden on the people by way of toll tax.

The LDF meet also wanted the state to ask the Centre to take steps to stop import of palm oil as it badly affected the coconut farmers, Viswan said.
