Gujarat's public debt rose to Rs 4.30 lakh crore in 2025-26: Govt
In 2024-25, the state paid Rs 25,604 crore towards interest and Rs 29,126 crore as principal, while for 2025-26, the revised estimates show that Rs 27,095 crore was paid towards interest and Rs 34,025 crore as principal.

Finance Minister Kanubhai Desai, in a written reply, said that the state's annual interest burden mounted to Rs 27,095 crore alongside principal debt servicing worth Rs 34,025 crore.
Desai was responding to a question by Congress MLA Imran Khedawala during the Question Hour on the third and final day of the assembly's monsoon session.
According to the reply, Gujarat's public debt, which stood at Rs 3,74,845 crore in 2024-25, increased to Rs 4,30,320 crore in 2025-26, as per revised estimates.

The government also provided details of the amount paid towards the principal and interest on the debt during the two financial years.

Thus, the amount earmarked towards repayment of interest increased by Rs 1,491 crore in 2025-26, while the principal payment rose by Rs 4,899 crore compared with the previous financial year.
