Coal India pays Rs 1,705.42 cr dividend to govt

Coal India Limited on Thursday handed over a dividend cheque of Rs 1,705.42 crore for 2007-08 to the government.

NEW DELHI: Coal India Limited on Thursday handed over a dividend cheque of Rs 1,705.42 crore for 2007-08 to the government.

Coal India Limited Chairman Partha S Bhattharyya gave the cheque to Minister of State for Coal Santosh Bagrodia.

In a statement, CIL said the Rs 1,705.42-crore dividend is the highest-ever paid by it to the government. Last year CIL paid Rs 1,500 crore as dividend.

CIL said it made a provisional profit (before tax and dividend) of Rs 9,576.22 crore against the budgeted profit of Rs 8,462.31 crore during 2007-08, a 12.37 per cent growth over Rs 8,522.22 crore earned in the previous year.

This, is however, without taking into account the impact of national coal wage agreement VIII, the statement said.
