Centre earns Rs 364.53 crore revenue in October by selling office scrap

The centre has earned a revenue of Rs 364.53 crores by selling office and electronic scrap through the nationwide Special Swachhata Campaign to promote cleanliness.

Speaking about the outcome of the drive held over October this year, Union Minister Jitendra Singh said that 88.05 lakh square feet of space was freed up during the exercise. Singh is presently the Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, and Earth Sciences. He is also the Minister of State for the Prime Minister’s Office, Prime Minister's Office, Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, and the Departments of Atomic Energy, and Space.

An official presentation said that the highest revenue from scrap disposal has been earned by the Department of Military Affairs at Rs 212.77 crores. The coal ministry raked in Rs 48.51 crores while the Railway Ministry earned Rs 33.05 crores during the month under review.


“We have decided to have a Swachhata month every year in October. Cleanliness is becoming a part of behaviour in government functioning very quickly. This year the drive was extended beyond Indian borders as overseas Indian missions had also participated,” Singh said.

An official statement noted that this was India’s largest office cleanliness campaign under which almost a lakh sites were addressed.
