The nationwide bandh call to protest the fuel price rise not only crippled commercial activity in Gujarat, but has also resulted in an estimated Rs 500 crore loss in industrial production.

AHMEDABAD: The nationwide bandh call to protest the fuel price rise not only crippled commercial activity in Gujarat, but has also resulted in an estimated Rs 500 crore loss in industrial production, a leading industry body claimed here on Monday.

"Gujarat suffered an estimated industrial production loss of Rs 500 crore due to the bandh," said Yatindra Sharma, Chairman of Gujarat Chapter Confederation of Indian Industry ( CII).

"Out of close to 4,000 textile manufacturing units in Surat producing an estimated Rs 60 crore worth fabric per day, nearly 80 per cent of them remained closed today," said President Federation of Indian Art Shilp Weaving Industry Association Arun Jariwala.

"Due to the bandh chemical manufacturing industry of the state was severely affected. Close to 4,000 small and big chemical manufacturing units are presently operating in the state," secretary of an apex industry body of chemical sector said.

"Gujarat which accounts for 35 per cent of country's total chemical exports valued at $35 billion annually was severely affected. The bandh has resulted in production loss of several crores in a single day," he said.
