Badal demands more central grants
Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal alleges that the central grants to Punjab were not proportionate to the state's contribution to the nation.
Highlighting the role played by the state in the development and growth of the country at the inaugural session of the conference here, Badal lamented the inadequacy of central grants to the state, saying it was adversely affecting development work.
"Inadequate central grants is adversely affecting the development of the state. There is need for more central grants for sustained development of the State", he said.
Describing the qualities of patriotism, leadership and entrepreneurship as central to the Punjabi character, he exhorted the scholars and writers of the state to support and promote Punjabiat.
The Chief Minister also complimented the organisers for holding a programme at such a major scale in which delegates from over twenty contries are participating.
The conference being held at the Punjab University Conference Hall was a confluence of VIPs and eminent Punjabis from all over the world who shared the same sentiment of preserving and promoting Punjabi culture and its heritage.
Noted journalists Kuldip Nayar and G S Sidhu Damdami, editor, Punjabi Tribune were among 14 eminent Punjabis honoured on the occasion.
In his keynote address, Nayar said Punjabis should be proud of their language and cited a recent UNESCO report which had listed Punjabi among languages that faced the threat of disappearing in the next 50 years.
