Annual plan outlay for Puducherry fixed at Rs 1,750 cr
The Planning Commission on Monday approved the Annual Plan Outlay of Rs 1,750 crore for the Union Territory of Puducherry for 2008-09.
Although the state had performed well in the manufacturing and service sectors, the gross state domestic product was not satisfactory compared to national average, Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia said after meeting with Chief Minister of Puducherry N Rangaswamy.
The state should aim at promoting tourism and work out models to rope in private sectors in its ventures, Ahluwalia said.
Complimenting the state for its human development indices, which rated better than national average, the Commission offered non-lending technical assistance for procuring master plan for developing tourism.
Ahluwalia advised the state to rationalise subsidy and encourage rainwater harvesting.
On the occasion, Rangaswamy said, "the Eleventh Plan will focus on the social sector development with allocations stepped up for upgrade of rural roads, better drinking water supply, slum upgrade, primary and secondary education, primary health care services and public distribution system."
He said the infrastructure facilities were being improved to lure investment for industrial development, tourism and IT related industries.
