NEW DELHI: Anil Ambani-controlled Reliance Group has emerged as the country's biggest overseas borrower through external commercial borrowings, accounting for 20.7 per cent of the total ECBs in 2006-07, followed by the Tatas and Mukesh Ambani-owned Reliance Industries.

According to an Assocham Eco-Pulse Study, the total ECB raised by Indian companies substantially increased from 24.7 billion dollar in 2006 to 29 billion dollar in 2007.

The share of Tatas amounted to 3.2 per cent at $930 million, while Reliance Industries raised $550 million with a two per cent share.

The Jindal Group with $540 million, Aditya Birla Group with $500 million and Videocn Limited with $200 million were the other major ECB borrowers in the last fiscal, the survey said.

The study found that the most of the money raised was spent on modernisation and acquisition of businesses in India and abroad.
