7412 farmers benefit from loan waiver scheme

A total of 7,412 farmers had their outstanding loans of Rs 13.04 crore waived off by various public sector banks in Sikkim thus far in compliance with the Centre's loan waiver scheme.

GANGTOK: A total of 7,412 farmers had their outstanding loans of Rs 13.04 crore waived off by various public sector banks in Sikkim thus far in compliance with the Centre's loan waiver scheme, according to the Food Security and Agriculture Development Department.

Following wide publicity given to the agriculture and debt relief scheme, 2008, throughout the state since March this year, thousands of farmers submitted their claims for waiver off their loans of which 7,412 farmers were found eligible for the benefit thus far, an official release said today.

A waiver/relief of Rs 13.04 crore has been granted by various public sector banks towards the outstanding loans of the above mentioned number of farmers, it said.

The exercise for identification of the eligible farmers under the agriculture debt waiver and debt relief scheme would continue till all prospective beneficiaries were identified and their loads written off, the release said.
