CHENNAI: Soon, the Reserve Bank of India will launch 10-rupee and 1,000-rupee notes with the symbol of the new rupee logo.

RBI officials said though coins had begun sporting the logo, it is for the first time that it would be used on currency notes. The notes are to be introduced during the festive season later this month.

Collectors are elated about the logo being printed on the rupee and the RBI officials expect a large number of them to be present at the bank to receive the notes on the launch.

On July 15, 2010, the rupee got the much awaited symbol, just like other leading currencies of the world. The new symbol is an amalgamation of Devanagari -'Ra' and the Roman 'R' without the stem. It was designed by IIT Bombay post-graduate D Udaya Kumar. The encoding of the symbol in the Indian Standards Institution took over a year after the symbol was selected.
