Wheat lifting in Punjab for central pool exceeds target
With total wheat procurement in the country set to cross the last year's target, the wheat lifting in Punjab for the central pool has exceeded the target of 80 lakh tonnes.
With the state government hoping to contribute over 90 lakh tons of wheat to central pool during this season, so far wheat procurement done by the state agencies and FCI is more than the last two years' lifting from the state towards the central pool.
The wheat lifting by government agencies from Punjab in 2006-07 and 2007-08 stood at 69.46 lakh tons and 67.80 lakh tons respectively.
A spokesman of Punjab Government today six government agencies and private millers have procured more than 86.59 lakh tons of wheat in Punjab till yesterday out of which 82.94 lakh tons (95.80 per cent) has been procured for the central pool and 1,52,793 tons has been procured for the state pool.
However, private millers lifted 2,12,870 tons of wheat which works out at 2.5 per cent of total procurement.
PUNGRAIN has so far procured 15, 30,140 tons whereas MARKFED procured 19, 64,270 tons, PUNSUP lifted 18, 86, 783 tons, PSWC lifted 10, 62,814 tons whereas PAIC was able to procure 9, 58,648 tons of wheat for the central pool.
