Wheat, corn cultivation up

The area under wheat and maize cultivation has increased to 263.91 lakh hectare during the on-going rabi season compared to 247.25 lakh hectare in the year-ago period.


NEW DELHI: The area under wheat and maize cultivation has increased to 263.91 lakh hectare during the on-going rabi season compared to 247.25 lakh hectare in the year-ago period.

According to latest figures available with agriculture ministry, maize has been sown in 9.86 lakh hectare (lh) against 6.79 lh last year, a release said on Tuesday. Higher coverage of wheat has been reported in Bihar, Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, it said.

Rabi rice has been sown in 8.81 lh so far as against 7.79 lh during the corresponding period of 2005-06. Coarse cereals have also been sown in more area this year as compared to last year. Coarse cereals this year so far covered 66.36 lh while it was 62.42 lh last year.

However, area under jowar marginally declined to 47.29 lh against 47.69 lh last year. The area covered under pulses rose to 124.32 lh till the week ended December 28, as compared with 123.6 lh last year.
