Wheat acreage up by 57 pc this year

Higher MSP announced by the govt has encouraged wheat growers up acreage of Rabi crop by 57.26% to 1.84 lakh hectares.

NEW DELHI: A higher minimum support price announced by the government has encouraged wheat growers increase acreage of the Rabi crop by 57.26 per cent to 1.84 lakh hectares till date, against 1.17 lakh hectares in the year-ago period.

"Wheat sowing has just started in some states. So far 1.84 lakh hectares area is covered, against 1.17 lakh hectares during the corresponding period last year," an official statement said.

The government has announced an MSP of Rs 1,000 per quintal for the Rabi season, up by Rs 250 a quintal from last year.

According to Crop Weather Watch released by the Agriculture Ministry, the acreage of gram, which is a major Rabi pulse, declined to 8.77 lakh hectares in the review period from 16.07 lakh hectares last year.

The farmers in Madhya Pradesh seem to have moved to wheat crop as gram acreage in the state went down to 2.71 lakh hectares as on November 1, compared to 9.16 lakh hectares a year ago.

The state farmers have already sown wheat in 70,000 hectares, while they did not undertake farming of the crop during the same period a year earlier.
