'Waive loans upto one lakh of farmers to stop suicides'

All India Bharat Kisan Sabha (BKS) vice-president Kolli Nageswara Rao demanded to Centre to waive loans upto one lakh of the farmers to save them from committing suicides.

VIJAYAWADA: All India Bharat Kisan Sabha (BKS) vice-president Kolli Nageswara Rao demanded to Centre to waive loans upto one lakh of the farmers to save them from committing suicides.

Speaking to pressmen here on Sunday, Rao said that Prime Minister's Package (PMP) announcing Rs 530 crore to waive off interest would not help the farmers in any way.

The heavy burden of loans were only reason behind the farmers committing suicides for which the Centre should come forward and announce waiver of Rs one lakh limit loans and provide remunerative prices to their produce, Rao said.

He said the interest waiver from 2004 to 2006 of Rs 1436 would not be enough as it had not included the interest of Rs 1662 reschduled during 2004 for farmers.

Rao said that PMP announcement of waiver of interest of Rs 3778 crores for Maharastra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala in 31 district was defective and which would not help the farmers.

He said if the centre did not announce waiver of loans upto Rs one lakh and provide remunerative price to the farmers, BKS would launch "Chalo Delhi" programme soon.
