Waive agriculture loan: Badal to Centre

Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Saturday asked the Centre to waive agriculture loan of farmers in the state and hike the Minimum Support Price of wheat and paddy.

JALANDHAR: Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Saturday asked the Centre to waive agriculture loan of farmers in the state and hike the Minimum Support Price of wheat and paddy.

"If a special package for relief on agriculture debt can be given to farmers in Southern states, why not the same facility be extended to the peasantry of Punjab," he told reporters here.

Badal said he recently met Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar to apprise him about the poor plight of Punjab farmers who contribute the largest share of foodgrains to the central pool.

During his meeting with Pawar, he demanded hike in the Minimum Support Price of wheat and paddy and said the fixing of MSP should be linked to the price index.

Badal demanded setting up of a Commission to ascertain the plight of farmers in the state.

The total agriculture debt of farmers amounted to nearly Rs 20,000 crore, the Chief Minister said.
