COIMBATORE : Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), Mettupalayam, near here, has undertaken a four-year project for establishment of lucrative industrial wood plantation with improved short rotation clones through contract farming.
The Rs 307.905 lakh scheme 'A value chain on industrial agroforestry in Tamil Nadu,' under National Agricultural Innovative project of ICAR, would be implemented on consortium approach, with Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree breeding, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu Newsprints and Papers Ltd, Karur, Seshasayee Paper Boards, Erode and Vasan Match Works, Gudiyatham, as partners, TNAU sources said.
Through the project, high yielding industrial plantation would be demonstrated in 500 acres representing five districts -- Coimbatore, Erode, Karur, Namakkal and Vellore in association with the partners.
It would also concentrate on development of new and alternative genetic resources for pulp and matchwood species, with improved wood properties.
Introduction of mechanization in forestry operations, coupled with post harvest management and value addition are the major research focus through which methods and processes would be developed for augmenting wood conversion efficiency and value addition to plantaion and industrial residues.

Aimed at augmenting the existing supply chain by introducting contract tree farming system through multi-stakeholder partnership, the project would disseminate wood market information system to all user agencies through information system which was not currently available.Download
