LUCKNOW: The Uttar Pradesh government on Wednesday, announced cane support price of Rs 130 per quintal for the early variety while those for the normal and inferior varieties have been fixed at Rs 125 and Rs 122.50 per quintal respectively for crushing season 2007-08.
This was announced by Minister for Sugarcane Naseemuddin Siddique in the state Vidhan Sabha today.
Later speaking to newsmen Chief Minister Mayawati said that the state government is serious towards the problems of the farmers and had provided Rs 113 crore as budgetary assistance and Rs 200 crore as government guarantee for payment of arrears by government and cooperative sugar mills.
Blaming the previous Samajwadi Party government for pending cane dues, she said that at the time of formation of her government the dues were Rs 3,005 crore, which came down to over 50 per cent after payment of dues of Rs 1,593 crore.
She said that government had tightened the noose around private sugar mills and recovery certificates have been issued against 64 such mills which were not serious in paying cane dues to farmers.
A letter has also been written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on September 10 making a request for giving interest free loan of Rs 1,875 crore to sugar mills for payment of dues, she said.
Taking serious view of the less weighing of the farmers produce, Mayawati said that state government had increased the amount of penalty to check the practice.
For first complaint of less weighing the fine would be Rs 5,000 per day and Rs 50,000 for being caught red handed, she added.
