Untimely rains may hit mango production, price rise likely

Untimely rain and cold weather conditions may marginally hit mango production in Gujarat and Maharashtra, pushing up the fruit's price this summer.

MUMBAI: Untimely rain and cold weather conditions may marginally hit mango production in Gujarat and Maharashtra, pushing up the fruit's price this summer.

The record low temperature this winter has caused extensive damage to the mango crop during the flowering season, a Agriculture Department officials said.

"Untimely rains and on-going unusually cold weather conditions in Gujarat, Maharashtra and other northern states last week may hit mango production," a mango cultivator said.

Maharashtra being a major mango producing centre, the yield is down by nearly 40 per cent because of unseasonal rains in major producing areas like Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg and Raigadh districts.

The mangoes are most likely to hit the markets in the first week of May and its prices may rise further from the present Rs 350 to Rs 500 a dozen, Patil said.

India is the world's largest mango producer, growing nearly 1,000 varieties of mango and contributing over 50 per cent of the world's total mango production of around 23 million metric tonnes.
