TN govt appeals to sago producers to re-open mills
Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday appealed to sago manufacturers in Salem, Namakkal, Erode, Karur and Dharmapuri districts to re-open their mills which had been closed down since September 1.
The mills were closed down demanding relaxation in the guidelines for quality test followed by Sago Serve, a Salem-based cooperative company which procures sago and starch from manufacturers, state Rural Industries Minister Pongalur N Palanisamy said in a statement here.
Due to this, some farmers were not able to market the tapioca they had produced, he said.
The Minister said certain quality tests had become mandatory as the starch and sago were also being used as food products.
The mill owners and farmers had moved Madras High Court on the issue. As per the court's directive, the Government had submitted the report of an experts' committee to formulate guidelines for quality control, he said.
Based on the court's verdict and considering the welfare of mill owners and farmers, the Government would take necessary decisions, he said and appealed to them to re-open their mills forthwith.
