TDP demands 90 per cent subsidy on seeds

Main Opposition TDP on Monday demanded the Andhra Pradesh Government to provide 90 per cent subsidy on seeds, to provide relief to the farmers in wake of the poor monsoons.

HYDERABAD: Main Opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) on Monday demanded the Andhra Pradesh Government to provide 90 per cent subsidy on seeds, to provide relief to the farmers in wake of the poor monsoons.

"Farmers are in distress due to deficit rainfall. The state government should supply quality seeds at 90 per cent subsidy to encourage farmers," senior TDP leader Y Ramakrishnudu said in a statement here.

Sowing operations were taken up in only 28 lakh hectares instead of the usual 78 lakh hectares due to failure of monsoons and the state should take all measures to encourage farmers, he said.

Contending that the present 30 per cent subsidy being given to farmers on seeds was not sufficient, Ramakrishnudu said "it should be increased to 90 per cent as a drought like situation prevailed in 21 districts of the state," the release added.
