Swaminathan lauds TN govt for pro-farmer policies
Noted agricultural scientist and Chairman of National Commission on Farmers M S Swaminathan has lauded Tamil Nadu government's decisions on providing two acres of land to poor farmers and writing off farm loans.
"Important steps have been taken by the Tamil Nadu government. I must compliment the government for its far-sighted policy," Swaminathan told reporters here last night.
The new DMK government in the state, fulfilling its poll promises, had announced waiver of cooperative farm loans besides offering two acres of land to landless farmers.
Improving economic status is a very important factor in preventing farmers' suicides, Swaminathan, who was here as part of the Commission's interaction with farmers, said.
The Commission would wind up its interaction with the farmers on September 10 and submit its final report to the government on October 6, he added.
Advocating formation of farmers' commissions in all states, he said a national policy on ryots should be evolved after taking inputs from the proposed state-level commissions.
Stressing the need for efficient water usage in agriculture, he said a committee constituted by the central government to develop a strategy on irrigation would hold its first meeting in New Delhi on September 9.
