Sugarcane procurement price hiked in Puducherry

In a bid to encourage sugarcane farmers in the Union Territory, an additional Rs 61 would be paid to the farmers supplying it to cooperative sugar mills.

PUDUCHERRY: In a bid to encourage sugarcane farmers in the Union Territory, an additional Rs 61 would be paid to the farmers supplying it to cooperative sugar mills.

Chief Minister N Rangasamy told reporters here yesterday that the farmers were being paid Rs 1,130 per tonne of cane they sold to the mills and now an additional price of Rs 61 would be given.

Around four lakh tonnes of cane had been procured for the current year`s (2007-2008) crushing season.

The mills would incur a Rs 2.4 crore additional expenditure by disbursement of the enhanced price, he said.
