Soybean crop needs rain in a week, otherwise yields will fall, says trade body

KOLKATA: Soybean crop needs rainfall in the next week otherwise yields fall, the Soybean Processors Association of India (SOPA) said on Monday.

So far, a survey in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan shows that crops are normal in these states, it said. In Madhya Pradesh, sowing began mid-June and was completed in the first week of July. Half of the area is already in the flowering stage, and the rest is expected to reach this stage in the next two weeks, it said.

"Right now the crop condition is normal. Rains are required in the next 5 to 7 days, otherwise the crop may be affected due to moisture stress resulting in yield loss," it said.


In Maharashtra, the crop has been sown again in 20% -25% of the area due to poor germination of seeds that were sowed the first time. Crop condition is normal but rainfall is needed in the next 5 to 7 days in some parts of Latur, Osmanabad and Beed districts, failing which crop may be affected due to moisture stress, the SOPA release said.

In Rajasthan, soybean has been sown over 9.80 lakh hectares. Crop condition is normal and rainfall is required in the next 5 -7 days, the SOPA release said.
