PUNE: Sourcing directly from farmers is catching on, with corporates and private individuals submitting proposals seeking licences to the state government.
Among the proposals the Maharashtra State Agriculture Marketing Board (MSAMB) has received, two are from large corporates, one from a private individual and another from Chennai-based retailer Subiksha for licences to source agri produce directly from farmers.
Ranger Farms, a Reliance group affiliate, has submitted a proposal for a single licence to source fruit, vegetables, pulses and cereals from the area covered by 41 agriculture produce marketing committees (APMC) across the state. MSAMB has forwarded all proposals it has received to the state government, awarding them its approval.
Harshvardhan Patil, state minister for marketing, confirmed the director of marketing had received the proposals. “The Reliance proposal will be forwarded by the director (marketing) of MSAMB, which I will receive shortly. They have asked to source from across the state,” he said.
