Six firms offer to supply wheat

Even the minimum price quoted by suppliers is 18 per cent more than the average rate of $325.59 per tonne at which the government contracted 5.11 lakh tons of wheat in the last round of tender.
While eight companies participated in the tender floated by State Trading Corporation (STC), which has been importing wheat on behalf of the government, the bids of two firms were either rejected or not considered, an STC official said.
"We have received offers in the range of 385-434 dollars per tonne," the official said, adding that Glencore has offered to supply the maximum quantity of three lakh tons.
Cargill India has offered to supply 80,000 tons, while Toepfer International 70,000 tons, Switzerland-based Ameropa 25,000 tons, Starcom 5,000 tons.
Interestingly, another government-owned trading firm PEC has also entered into the bidding process by offering to supply 50,000 tons of wheat.
The official said that bids of Concordia was rejected, while the offer of Yamuna Flour Mills was not considered due to different factors.
The government will take a decision on the quantity to be imported by September 3 based on prices quoted by the global suppliers, an official said.
STC had floated a global tender on August 23 for import of wheat for an unspecified quantity to be delivered at designated Indian ports between October and December.
