Sibal calls Modi's claims hollow
Union Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal on Saturday described as "hollow" Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's claim about growth in his state's agriculture sector.
"It is a false claim that the farmers in the state have benefited from the government's schemes and that the annual revenue from agriculture was up to Rs 32,000 crore," Sibal told reporters here.
"The fact is that the farmers are in heavy debt and forced to commit suicide out of poverty and deprivation."
Gujarat's BJP government has failed on all fronts, including in agriculture. It has failed to provide cheap power to farmers and also make available to them a proper irrigation system, thus compelling small-time farmers to sell their land and others to contemplate suicide, Sibal charged.
Sibal showed CDs of interviews of several farmers wherein they spoke about poor power supply, non-existent irrigation facilities and the debt trap created by money-lenders.
Had Modi's claim about the agricultural sector's annual revenue touching Rs 32,000 crore been true, then each farmer would have owned a helicopter, Sibal said.
