Seminar to give fillip to rice R&D

The Delhi University will be hosting an international seminar on rice this week.

NEW DELHI: The Delhi University will be hosting an international seminar on rice this week. "Agriculture is the mainstay of people in this country, yet so little research is taking place in the subject.

There is stagnation when it comes to research in agriculture, though some work is happening in an isolated manner, much more concerted work is required," said Delhi university vice-chancellor Deepak Pental.

For Pental, a professor of genetics and a plant breeding researcher, the seminar provides an opportunity to contribute to formulating a strategy for plant breeding.

"What kind of R&D on rice is required? What is the global knowledge on the subject, what is India's knowledge?

The idea is to eventually develop rice for the needs of this country. How to increase productivity per acreage? These are the questions we will seek answers for during this seminar.”
