With agriculture witnessing slow growth, SAARC countries have agreed to set up a forum to enhance cooperation between farmers of the region to boost production.

NEW DELHI: With agriculture witnessing slow growth, SAARC countries have agreed to set up a forum to enhance cooperation between farmers of the region to boost production.

"A South Asian Forum for Farmers and Cooperatives will be set up to address issues related to farm community in the SAARC region," Suresh Prabhu, Chairman of the Conference of 'Science-based Agricultural Transformation towards Alleviation of Hunger and Poverty in SAARC countries', told PTI.

Prabhu said the Executive Committee of the Forum, comprising two representatives from each SAARC country, will meet in Pakistan in September to take the initiative forward.

The three-day conference, which ended on Friday and saw participation from South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation countries, also recommended setting up of regional information centres to alert farmers of the region on movement of pests, spread of diseases and climate factors.

"Such timely information would help farmers adopt better farming practices," R B Singh, Secretary General of the Conference said.
