Rising income to fuel demand for poultry products: IPSA

Rising income, urbanisation and population would fuel the demand for eggs and meat in India by 2020, said Indian Poultry Science Association.

LUDHIANA: Rising income, urbanisation and population would fuel the demand for eggs and meat in India by 2020, said Indian Poultry Science Association.
"By 2020, the demand for eggs and meat would surge under different income and population growth scenarios in the range of 6.3-12.1 million tonne and 9.5-18.5 million tonne respectively," IPSA President T S Johri said here.
However, India would be able to meet this hike in demand provided the eggs and meat production continue to grow at the current pace.
"If eggs and meat production continues to grow at 6 per cent and 12 per cent per annum respectively, then Indian poultry industry would be able to satisfy the increased demand," he said.
Production of egg and meat in the country stands at 2.6 million tonne and 1.6 million tonne respectively, he informed adding the poultry industry is worth Rs 300 billion.
Although the per capita availability of eggs and meat has increased to 44 eggs and 1.76 kg respectively, yet it is far below the recommended levels of 180 eggs and 11 kg meat as suggested by Nutritional Advisory Committee, he added.
