BALISIHA: A new method of multiple crop production will increase rice production several times within the next two years in Assam, Union Panchayati Raj Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar said on Tuesday.
Under the new method of rice cultivation, the difference between utilisation of old and new seed varieties would be apparent as it would help the cultivators of the state to earn financial gain within a short period, he said at the Multiple Crop Demonstration Project here in Sonitpur district.
The Rs five-crore project covering about 700 hectare in the first phase involved 1,713 cultivators of the village with Rs 1.5 crore being released by the North Eastern Council (NEC).
Stating multiple cropping was adopted in south India, particularly Tamil Nadu, several decades ago, the minister, also NEC chairman, said that Nagaland had also benefited from the method.
Meanwhile, NEC member Dr I K Barthakur said that the demonstration led to harvest two months before the usual time required. He was attending a ceremonial harvesting function of high yielding variety of paddy in 10 villages under Balisiha- Bandarmari area.
