CHENNAI: Federation of All India Rice Millers Association on Saturday said that the rice production in the country fell by five million tonnes last year and asked the Centre and state governments to take this as a warning signal and address the concerns of the sector.

Speaking to reporters here, Thulasingam, President of the association said that last year the rice production had a shortfall of five million tonnes and this had to be seriously viewed by the centre and state governments, keeping in mind the population growth rate.

By 2012 there would be a requirement of 128 million tonnes of rice; he said adding that the total food grain production of 184 million tonnes, of which rice contributed to 80 million tonnes.

The government should adopt a three-pronged approach to tackle this situation. Acquisition of agricultural land should be banned, subsidy should be increased and technology must be developed, he said.

He said that the association would hold "Rice Tech-Grain Tech 2008," a three day rice industry exhibition cum conference here from Jan 25.

The conference will be inaugurated by Subodh Kant Sahai, Minister for Food Processing Industries and is expected to have about 500 delegates, K Singaravadival, Director, Paddy Processing Research Centre said.
