PUNE: Garlic prices have shot up in Maharashtra amid a decrease in supply and increase in demand.

For the first time since 2010, prices have crossed Rs 100 a kg in the wholesale markets. In retail markets of Mumbai and Pune, garlic is selling for Rs 150-200 per kg.

In 2010, wholesale garlic prices had hit Rs 200/kg.

"Garlic prices have ruled 20-25% higher this year. Prices are high in markets where demand is more," said Dixit Shah, garlic trader at Vashi wholesale market in Mumbai.

Stocks are about to get over and the new crop is not expected to hit the market before January. According to a report by National Horticulture Research and Development Foundation, 75-80% of the garlic stock is over.
