Reddy seeks increased productivity in agro-allied sec
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy on Friday said the growth of animal husbandry, fisheries and dairying should be almost four times from the present level.
Chairing the working group of the sub-committee meeting of National Development Council on Agriculture and Related Issues in Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries with officials of these departments, he discussed issues related to availability of institutional credit to suggest measures for increasing area and productivity.
The committee will also facilitate declaration of national policies on livestock and fisheries development, an official release said.
Reddy said agricultural and allied sector growth in the country is as low as 1.72 per cent compared to overall growth of over nine per cent. Even in the 1.72 agricultural and allied sector growth, contribution of animal husbandry, dairying and fisheries is more than the agriculture.
Reddy said under present circumstances, it was difficult to boost agricultural growth to the desired level of more than four per cent, while it was possible to increase growth of allied sectors.
He wanted the outlay for fisheries to be increased by four times to 0.88 per cent and that of animal husbandry to be upscaled by five times to two per cent.
Reddy said institutional credit should not be less than Rs one lakh crore, with interest subsidy from the government.
"We should also use the market mechanism to boost production, sustainability and growth of these sectors. We should also see the possibility of venture capital funding to help these sectors," he said.
