Rajasthan ups foodgrain output
Rajasthan has set a target of 72.90 lakh tons of foodgrains production for the kharif season following sufficient monsoon rains in the state as well as better sowing.
Last year, the state produced 58.01 lakh tonnes during the same season.
Similarly, the oilseeds production, including seasamum, groundnut, soyabean and castorseed, is expected to touch 19.49 lakh tonnes as against 13.60 lakh tonnes last year, state Agriculture and Co-operative Minister Prabhu Lal Saini said today.
The higher foodgrains and oilseeds production may be possible not only due to normal to excess rainfall in 19 districts but also better sowing in 57.10 lakh hectares of land, which is about 6 lakh hectares more than last year's sowing, Saini said.
There would be no dearth of fertilisers in the state, he asserted.
According to the agriculture department, 13 districts have received less than normal rainfall as on August 20, hence kharif foodgrain production could fluctuate if rainfed areas are not provided sufficient irrigation, he said.
"We hope the last leg of s-w monsoon further stays up to first week of September and bless the farmers of 13 districts where rainfall was deficit but sowing has been done," he said.
