Punjab to bring 34 lakh hectares land under wheat farming
Punjab will bring 33.75 lakh hectares of land under wheat cultivation in the coming rabi season and expects to produce 145 lakh metric tonne of the food grain, said state agriculture department.

MOGA: Punjab will bring 33.75 lakh hectares of land under wheat cultivation in the coming rabi season and expects to produce 145 lakh metric tonne of the food grain, said state agriculture department.
"Although the area under wheat in ensuing rabi season will be reduced by one lakh hectares against last year, we expect to produce 145 lakh tonne of wheat," Punjab Agriculture Joint Director Gurdev Singh Gill said here today.
Last year, the area under wheat stood at 34.67 lakh hectares while the state produced 145.96 lakh metric tonne of wheat, he said.
The Joint Director said the department was fully prepared to meet fertilisers requirement for rabi crop. He further said the government had formulated a programme of seed replacement in phased manner in a bid to boost production.
During the current rabi season, there would be 20 per cent wheat seed replacement and next year it would be increased to 40 per cent. In the following three years, there would be 100 per cent replacement of seed varieties, he added.
