Punjab govt to enter into contract farming

The Punjab government has decided to enter into contract farming as part of its efforts towards diversification of crops from wheat-paddy cycle.

JALANDHAR: The Punjab government has decided to enter into contract farming as part of its efforts towards diversification of crops from wheat-paddy cycle.

Revealing this today state Cooperation Minister Captain Kanwaljeet Singh promised to offer competitive global rates to farmers by exploring domestic as well as international markets.

"It has been witnessed that private companies enter into contract farming for any specific crop but later they backtrack if they don't see any profit. As such companies have a sole motive of earning profit, state government has decided to enter into the field of contract farming," the Minister told reporters here.

He added that as a pilot project of contract farming, agreements have already been signed for cultivation of basmati and potato.

Earlier, a big-time private company had entered into contract farming of tomatoes in Hoshiarpur district but later breached the agreement by disappearing. Again another big industrial backtracked from buying crop of baby corn, for which they struck a contract with the farmers of Jalandhar district, the Minister alleged.

He revealed that as part of its move for diversification, Markfed had indulged into a sort of contract farming of potatoes with farmers of Jalandhar and initially as many as 50 farmers were enrolled for certification of their crop with European standards.
