In a bid to provide succour to the farmers hit by severe cold and frost during last winter, Punjab government on Monday announced a Rs 16.35 crore relief package.

CHANDIGARH: In a bid to provide succour to the farmers hit by severe cold and frost during last winter, Punjab government on Monday announced a Rs 16.35 crore relief package.

The decision was taken in a Cabinet meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal here, Media Adviser Harcharan Bains said.

The relief was announced despite cold and frost condition not coming under 11 categories of natural calamities specified by Centre, Bains said.

Government decided to deviate from the existing rules as the Chief Minister is of the view that such cases should be considered as natural calamities, he added.

The Cabinet has also decided to impose one per cent of infrastructure fee on purchase of food grains to revive 150 year old canal system of the state.

This fee will mobilise additional resources that can be utilised to ensure sufficient water availability to farmers, Bains said.
