Pulse output likely to go up by 12%

Pulses production in Kharif 2007 is likely to increase by 12 per cent to 51.25 lakh tons as against 45.7 lakh tons in the previous season, according to trade estimates released on Monday.

NEW DELHI: Pulses production in Kharif 2007 is likely to increase by 12 per cent to 51.25 lakh tons as against 45.7 lakh tons in the previous season, according to trade estimates released on Monday.

The tur (arhar) output is projected at 23.85 lakh tons in the current Kharif season against 20.95 lakh tons in the last year, said traders at the annual pulses meet organised by specialised media house Agriwatch.

Production of moong is pegged at 12.3 lakh tons compared to 11.1 lakh tons while urad output is estimated at 9.05 lakh tons against 8.15 lakh tons during the period under review, Agriwatch said in a release.

The increased output projected by traders for Kharif 2007 could bring partial relief to consumers by increasing domestic supply. Pulses are ruling at higher rates than last year as there is a huge demand-supply mismatch.

India is importing pulses to fill this gap. The government had decided in April to import 15 lakh tons of pulses by December to stabilise prices in the domestic market.

According to the fourth advance estimate of the government, pulses output is estimated higher at 14.23 million tons during 2006-07 crop year (June-May) against 13.39 million tons in the previous year, but still is short of demand which is pegged at over 17 million tons.

The acreage of pulses in the ongoing kharif season has reached to 95.18 lakh hectare till August 2, as against 89.2 lakh hectare in the corresponding period last year, according to government data.
